Pastor's Picks for December 6, 2016

December 6, 2016

Every Tuesday, I will do my best to share with you books I like, articles that are interesting and any other resources that I think will help you on your Christian journey.

Parenting by Paul Tripp

Paul Tripp is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and pastors to follow.  He is one of those guys that really knows how to pack a punch when it comes to communicating.  As an example, check out his quick video blog entitled, "Should I Try to Be My Child's Best Friend." Also, I highly encourage you to read his book on parenting in 2017.  I know you will be tremendously blessed by what he has to say.

A Culture Report

Recently, the CDC has reported a drop in abortions in America, and this drop moves abortions to the lowest level since 1969. This is stunning considering how often issues (whether it is an issue on abortion, marriage, gender...etc) become normalized within the media. Many times when it comes to cultural issues we are convinced that the battle has been lost, and that we are on the wrong side of history.   In an age where it seems that we cannot change the tide of culture, I wanted to share this article to offer some hope.

The Real Saint Nicholas

I love the legend of Santa Claus.  How can you not when you have small kids?  However, the story of Saint Nicholas (who Santa Claus is loosely based off of) is even more fascinating to me as a theologian and a pastor.  Kevin DeYoung writes a great article explaining who the revered Saint was, and how our legend of Santa Claus is based off of him.

I am reading pretty much constantly.  Here are a few of my favorites this year:

Biography - Mission to Nuremberg: An American Army Chaplain and the Trial of the Nazis by Tim Townsend

This book follows the story of Army Chaplain Henry Gerecke, and his assignment to minister to Nazis war criminals.  This book is a fantastic picture of grace.

This book is a must read for every Christian.  You can check out my review of the book here (http://www.jasonkennedy.tv/book-reviews).  This book will change the way you think about prayer.

Non-FictionAftermath: The Remnants of War: From Landmines to Chemical Warfare--The Devastating Effects of Modern Combat by Donovan Webster

Webster's book is fascinating and highlights something that I have never thought of about warfare.  Go on this investigative journey with him as he discovers the waste of warfare from World War I to the Iraq Conflict.
